Boil them, bake them, fry them, put them in a casserole

“Friends have been made and relationships forged over a basket of fried green tomatoes and okra.” That’s your introduction to Sweet Potatoes (well, shut my mouth) Restaurant in the downtown arts district. Owners Stephanie Tyson and Vivian Joiner describe the cuisine as both uptown and down-home, leaving their patrons no choice but to get on down there to see what they mean.
They mean three-cheese macaroni and ham soufflé for lunch, and “build your …
You think it’s not rocket science? Think again. Michele’s Day Spa offers an LED light propulsion treatment that imitates NASA’s technique for wound healing and tissue repair in space. The FDA has approved it for alleviating signs of aging and uneven skin tones, and it involves the combination of amber, red, and infrared LED light to create collagen and elastin. Collagen plumps up the skin and elastin makes it firm and wrinkle-free. The red and …

Moravians are great for Christmas but not so much for New Year’s. Wake Forest closes down for winter break and so does UNCSA. You’re pretty much on your own to go find a New Year’s Eve party that will ring in the new year, run the old year out of town, and maybe introduce you to some attractions you haven’t seen lately—or ever.

They used to hang tobacco in these old barns 100 years ago, bundle up big batches of golden leaves and dangle them from massive overhead timbers. Now it’s people who come to get the “cure” from oversized stone fireplaces, whirlpool Jacuzzis or hot tubs, and a mountain view that just goes on forever. Pilot Knob Inn B&B has seven tobacco barn log cabins and five suites situated on the eastern slope of Pilot …
The western end of the state saw little violence until very near the end of the Civil War

A North Carolina Civil War Trail marker in Salisbury marks the spot where the Confederacy maintained a detention facility for Union prisoners. Confederate and Union deserters congregated at Fort Hamby in Wilkesboro, and led a local reign of terror. Most significant of Civil War events in this region was Stoneman’s Raid, and a historical marker commemorating that bloody campaign is located in Statesville, at US 64/70 (East Front Street) at Tradd Street.
