What began in a downtown church parking lot in Winston-Salem has quickly grown into a food festival mentioned in the pages of Bon Appetit. With the move in 2009 to a larger space at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds, the RibFest has been able to expand its space for more rib teams and vendors.

NASCAR greats such as Richard Petty, Junior Johnson and Dale Earnhardt all raced at Bowman Gray before moving up to the Winston Cup series (now called the Sprint Cup). The grounds at Tanglewood Park are transformed one day a year into a day at the races—complete with tailgaters, horsemen, petting zoo, marching bands, and vendors selling their wares. Five horse races are on the schedule, with purses ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. Proceeds from the daylong event will benefit the Tanglewood Equestrian Association, whose mission is to support Tanglewood Park and the local equestrian community.

Reynolda Gardens is comprised of 129 acres of lush landscape. It was originally part of the early-20th-Century estate of tobacco magnate Richard Joshua Reynolds and his wife Katharine Smith Reynolds. Today, walking and hiking trails can be found throughout the gardens. Spots for picnicking, or just relaxing, also draw visitors to the area, which is now owned by Wake Forest University. Amateur photographers will love walking in Reynolda Gardens.

Walking into The Rush gym in downtown Winston-Salem, you do get a rush–from the bright colors and pounding music, not to mention the sea of cardio machines that can be spotted from the front door. Tanglewood Park’s display of holiday scenes in lights is celebrating its 18th year. Each holiday season since 1992, Forsyth County’s Tanglewood Park hangs lights and lit displays throughout the park for visitors to view as they drive through.
