Krispy Kreme, Winston-Salem, NC

A visit to Winston-Salem is a visit to the home of Krispy Kreme

by Jennifer Maxwell | September 06, 2010

With over 600 stores in 20 countries, you don’t have to travel to Winston-Salem to watch hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts roll down the conveyor belt and get covered in sugary glaze. But, to me, Krispy Kreme and Winston-Salem are synonymous. It’s more than just because the doughnuts got their start here in 1937. Something about the smell of Krispy Kremes wafting in the air just brings me back to my hometown no matter …

A Winston-Salem favorite still going strong.

by Jennifer Maxwell | September 05, 2010

I remember as a teen spending an afternoon shopping at Thruway Center with my grandmother. One of our favorite places to go when we wanted something sweet to top off the day was a newish place, The Dessertery (as it was then known). And while today the owners have expanded their selections to include breakfast, lunch and dinner, Midtown Café and Dessertery still has plenty of cookies, cakes and brownies on …

Menus are full of selections from local wineries such as Childress, Shelton and RayLen vineyards. Order a glass of wine while dining in the Triad to sample the grapes grown along the Yadkin Valley wine country.

Historic areas are easy to find in and around Winston-Salem. Old Salem, Bethabara Park, Reynolda House, Korner’s Folly, and the list goes on. What can I say; we’re proud of our history. But one of the best areas to get a glimpse of the area’s origins is located just northwest of Winston-Salem proper, and that’s Bethania.

As an avid fan of BBT (The Big Bang Theory, obviously!), I feel right at home at Brew Nerds in Winston-Salem. The coffee shop roasts its own blends on site, with plenty of comic-book kitsch in sight.

While the Triad (Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point) has several top-notch colleges, choosing which one to highlight in this post was an easy one. As a graduate of UNC-Greensboro, I knew which college I wanted to tell people about.

With two Winston-Salem locations, Kernel Kustard offers a unique alternative to the many area chain ice cream shops. Except, Kernel Kustard doesn’t serve ice cream, it serves frozen “kustard,” otherwise known as frozen custard. What is that? I didn’t know either. Not to worry, though.
